Veterinarians interested in attaining Diplomate status with the ABVP must go through a demanding application and certification process that requires the demonstration of ethical professional conduct and an extensive knowledge of a species-specific practice. The Diplomate title is awarded only to experienced veterinarians who have worked to improve their professional knowledge and skills through an extensive education and exam process in one of 11 veterinary specialties recognized by the ABVP and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
After completing the training and passing the examination, a process that takes a minimum of three years, veterinarians must continue to demonstrate a commitment to high professional standards and education. A select group, the list of ABVP Diplomates comprises fewer than 1,000 veterinarians worldwide.
